MINORITY-OWNED BUSINESSES

Businesses owned (51% +) by minorities can gain access to numerous business opportunities by becoming certified as such.

AS OF JAN. 14, 2025, Jewish-owned Businesses are now deemed 'minority' businesses by the MDBA, OJCC & US DOC.

state & Local MBE

For doing business with cities, counties and state government agencies

Firms looking to expand into the government sector, or looking to increase business in this sector, the MBE certification is the perfect starting point. Almost all state & local governments offer certifications for minority-owned businesses to help gain a competitive edge when pursuing government contracts and subcontracts. States that offer the MBE certification typically have mandatory spending goals with certified firms that must be met annually.

State & Local DBE

For doing business with the State DOT agencies, airports, shipping ports and local public works

There is another state certification available for minority-owned firms – a DBE (Disadvantaged Business Enterprise) certification. A woman & minority certification used specifically for state DOT and DOT sub-agencies. These agencies include airports; shipping ports; public transportation agencies (county bus programs & subways); and all highway, street and bridge-related contracts. If your company’s offerings have any applicability in these areas, then the DBE is a great addition to your business toolbox.

federal 8(a) Business Development

For doing business with the federal government

The most sought after certification program is the SBA’s 8(a) Business Development Program. This is for companies who are ready to take their business to the next level. This certification may only be held once in a company’s lifetime, and is good for 9 years. This is the most sought-after federal certification, and allows government agencies to sole-source (no-bid) contracts up to $4 million. This is also the most utilized certification in federal subcontracts.

We recommend companies have at least $350,000 revenue before pursuing the 8(a).

nmsdc mbe

Private-sector MBE for use on Corporate Supplier diversity programs

For the businesses who are looking to expand contracting in the private-sector, especially with larger corporations/Fortune 500 companies, the NMSDC (National Minority Supplier Development Council) WBE is the easiest route to get you there. Being the nation’s largest private-sector minority-owned business certification, the NMSDC MBE is built for firms looking to participate in Suppler Diversity programs with large corporations.
